Established in January 1985 and sponsored by Chongqing University, Chongqing University Press (CQUP) is one of the 9 key publishing centers directly under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Ministry of Education. Its main task is to publish textbooks of high quality, teaching reference materials, scientific treatises, popular science reading materials, and popular books. It also purchases copyrights from Hong Kong, Taiwan and foreign publishers, and then publishes them either in their original languages or in translated simplified Chinese. Its publications cover science and engineering, such as mechanical, electrical and information technology. Categories include architecture, economy, management, law, Arts and Humanity, English language, medical treatment and health protection, etc.

In the past 20 years, CQUP has published more than 3,000 kinds of books. Textbooks and treatises account for 75%. Many of them were selected by the Ministry of Education and other commissions as key publications. About 200 books received awards by the state, provinces and relevant ministries and commissions. Before the establishment of Chongqing Municipality in 1997, CQUP was recognized as an outstanding publishing house by Sichuan Province. It was also selected as an outstanding innovator in the national textbook development and management field.

CQUP has set up several kinds of foundations to promote the publication of higher quality textbooks and treatises. Paying special attention to its prestige and strictly obeying the law of Copyright and contracts, CQUP has been working in cooperation with McGraw-Hill, Pearson Education, Thomson, SAGE Publications, Taylor & Francis, ICON Books, Compass Group Ltd in Hong Kong, China, Wunan Inc. in Taiwan, China, as well as others. CQUP is willing to have extensive exchange and cooperation with more overseas publishers.
